Three Creators. Two cults. One city. Nothing else—except the Void.

       416 years ago, the Void devoured the whole world, swallowing everyone and everything in existence. Well, everything except the last city on Earth, a city possessing no records of history or science. Only superstition and myth remain, because the looming, unmoving abyss of emptiness surrounding the city allows anyone to go in...but no one to come out.

       Lucia Sanctum doesn't like to think about the Void. She doesn't like to think about the doctrines of the unseen Voidmaster and his devoted cult ruling the last city. In fact, she is not convinced the Voidmaster is real at all, though his cult—known as "the Seers"—tells citizens of Acheron that the Voidmaster replaced his Earthly creation with darkness as punishment for choosing pleasure over piety. His darkness is, supposedly, responsible for blotting out even the stars.

       But Lucia knows the stars still watch from above. She prays to them daily and trusts them to remove her Gift, an aura of pain hurting anyone who comes near her. All she wants is to feel the touch of another, to find family, friendship, and love instead of rejection and isolation. But at the moment the stars are meant to align, they do not cure her Gift. Instead, the stars endow her skin with starlight, just as a supernaturally Gifted man rises to rule the city, claiming to be the Creator of the universe. He calls himself "the Materialist" and promises to overthrow the Voidmaster's authoritarian cult, to resurrect the dead, and—most astoundingly of all, to fill the Void with a new world of paradise. Seeing Lucia's divine light, the Materialist tempts her with the cure the stars failed to provide. All Lucia has to do in return is combine her radiance with his special Voidmatter, join his cult, and rule the new world alongside him as the reincarnated co-Creator of the universe.

       Lucia finds his claims laughable. The stars are the Creators of the universe. Not the Voidmaster, not the Materialist, and certainly not herself. But when the Materialist shows her just how capably her light reforms the Void, Lucia must make a choice: will she refuse his false doctrines, only to live a life of loneliness in the last city on Earth, or will she give up the stars to live a lie of divine proportions, daring to exalt herself above the city, and subject her mind to the brainwashing of a cosmically powerful conman?

       That is, unless he is telling the truth.

       That is, unless the Seers are telling the truth and the Voidpuppets appearing throughout the city really do herald their maker's return for retribution.
